PJ did it

Y’know how every once in a while, in The Family Circus, they run a little disclaimer that says Bill Keane is on vacation and his son “Billy” is going to draw the strip?

That’s a little how I feel looking at the new logo of the N.C. Lottery.

This is the best we could do? From the choice of colors to the misshapen lighthouse that looks perched on the backs of what appears to be two giant fishes to the sun and star rising or is it setting in the west, it all looks slightly off.

Yes, the lottery commission is on a tight schedule, and, yes, it’s hard to imagine that anybody is going to play the lottery because of a logo, but that doesn’t mean we have to settle. Remember the state motto: Esse Quam Vidieri. It’s not Soso Quam Vidieri

OK… while I don’t normally criticize others in my profession (creative design and branding)… I’ve got to agree about the state of our ‘state lottery logo’. When officially ‘unveiled’ on the six o’clock news last night my reaction was “arggghhh… we’ll be the laughing stock of the lottery states!” The logo design process is a series of steps, trial and error, design and re-design to come up with a professional, memorable image that best represents a product or service. I just hope we’re not remembered for the wrong reasons!

I’ll bet even if I had made the ‘Lottery Logo’, someone would
complain. wink

Ouch! raspberry Can we have a look at the clipart one the staff did?

Sometimes bad design, rather than communicating what the designer was trying to convey, instead seems to give away what the designer was really thinking; for example, the way the word “Education” is inserted into this logo in an informal (not to mention cliched) typeface—like an afterthought that’s trying to appear nonchalant. Maybe a little defensive on the justification for the lottery?

It’s not the colors or the images that bother me.  We are gambling with education.  But at least we say so.

Who cares?  Finish up the logo so we can get our money!  money money money!  Must balance the budget! $$$$ Yee ha!
