Conversations about news, life and the Winston-Salem Journal

Drumroll (stick) please …

One last post before rambling off into drumstick heaven…

As most of you know, we’ve been doing an audition of sorts the past few months for a comic strip to replace Kudzu, after the death of Doug Marlette. Here’s a piece from The Wall Street Journal about the comics business that speaks to many of the issues we’ve been dealing with. And as a reminder, you can post your comments about our tryouts here..

Have a safe, festive and restful Thanksgiving…

Does the Journal encourage the exclusion of private schools in the holiday basketball tournaments that are sponsored by the Journal both financially and through advertisements?

The Journal doesn’t choose the tournament teams for the Spencer and Garber tournaments. Selection committees for both tournaments take care of picking teams. We don’t encourage the exclusion of any school—public or private.

You sponsor something, you are responsible.

i’m ashamed to say i don’t peruse the funnies. sad but true. i used to read doonesbury, but i came to realize you don’t “read” a comic strip. you only look at it. the recent strip that featured a dying cancer patient was gripping. sometimes strips pay homage to another one, interjecting ink to acknowledge say peanuts’ departure.

comics to me are a waste of time and space. print addresses for charities, like something to help the victims of the mess in bangladesh. donate to help charities this holiday season because boy they are hurting still from 9-11.

this week i anticipate bringing an early christmas present to you.

imagine a hole, 35 feet deep, adorned by bloody spikes. children, women, the elderly and men were tossed down into this well of hell, ripped, some still living. a triad man was one of several who rescued survivors. you will find my article, i hope, in black boxes downtown, with photos by daniel bayer.

my online stuff i keep tabs on, and this article has seemed to have gotten the most hits.

comic strips are a diversion. what we need is a stark in your face remembrance that things aren’t rosy. when i lost 22 cm. of my intestines in a diverticulitis operation postponed in 1995, i rented “the insider” and later met dr. jeffrey wigand who recently told me candy cigarettes are illegal in canada but legal in n.c. rosy would be to outlaw them in n.c. run a RJR lung cancer strip.
