Apologies for the absences. Trips to Richmond. Vacations. Etc. etc. And all Tiger all the time. I was flipping channels the other night, and the Golf Channel was advertising a special one-hour report on Tiger Woods. Crazy stuff.
Closer to home, it is a crazy day out there, one that matches the rawness outside. Murder-suicide. Teacher charged with having sex with student. Potential layoffs at RJR.
One of the hardest things for newspapers to do is cover themselves. But we are part of the news. Sometimes we are in the news. Take this morning’s story about the search for a new branch for the public library. One of the sites the county is considering is the Journal property at Fifth/Marshall/Spruce. We’ve reported before that we were doing a study on this building and how it fits into our long-term needs now that a)our printing facility is a few miles east, and b) we have fewer employees. But I hadn’t heard about the library deal. It’s uncomfortable when we become part of the story, but sometimes it is unavoidable. All you can do is put the facts out there and then let events take their course.
Your host is Ken Otterbourg, the managing editor at the Winston-Salem Journal. It's a forum to discuss the media, from
What was your take on the lack of coverage for the Mary Garber in comparison with the historical coverage of the Frank Spencer. Remember, they didn’t play on a high school football night. Asked during your travels but thought I would try again. Happy Holidays and good luck with the library. I personally do not want to see you move from the building that you are in now.
I guess a couple of thoughts. We certainly give more coverage to the Spencer than the Garber, but I’m not sure the goal is gender parity. And we did give good coverage to the Garber. The Spencer is just a bigger tournament. It draws bigger crowds, etc. There’s an argument to be made that it draws bigger crowds because it gets more coverage, but realistically it is a bigger tournament because more people are (still) interested in men’s basketball than women’s basketball.
Hmmm, that is interesting. I guess if gender parity isn’t the goal then you have accomplished it. Who is the judge? I am sure the girls and coaches that participated and do participate will be disappointed to hear the editors view on this.
